“ADMIT ONE” - ASHA’S JANUARY 2021 WATCHLIST 🎥🤩⚡️
Moving Pictures and Series whose ART truly inspired me.
This month, the films I chose carry a consistent theme in the criteria: Cinematography, Direction, Production Design. Meaning every art element paired seamlessly with the unique vision respective to that film.
Whether it is a period piece, like El Angel (2019) where we’re set in 1972, not only did the Production Design impeccably depict the era so perfectly, but the Cinematography encapsulated a classic 70s style of action and drama shots (pans, zooms, wide shots, etc), and the Direction (blocking, beats, chemistry) so clever and unique, refreshing.
Then, the Series I chose fit along the criteria: Writing, Style, Design. Meaning the style, design, and writing/dialogue, all encompassed the distinctive themes presented in the series’ totality.
For example, Rugrats (1991) shows us a quirky, whimsical perspective of the lives of babies. Everything we see, whether its a couch, picture on the wall, vase, toy, car, clothing/hair of a character, everything falls consistent with the playfulness of a child, the colors, the grand-ness of the world they live in. The dialogue, the context, the subtext, the scenarios the characters are placed in — it all is so perfectly “Rugrats” — and in the name itself.
I hope you find my January 2021 Watchlist well and get a feel for how I viewed and resonated with these films + series. It’s almost like a playlist for movies. 🤓
If you have seen these or have not, I challenge you to remove all bias and view these projects for the collaborative pieces of art they are. Think of all the moving parts (cast/crew) that truly understood what the intention of these films + series aimed to project. I’d love to hear your thoughts as well! 💌
Enjoy!
